About Shena

All my life I have worked with horses and taught many people throughout my long career.   I am happy to help anyone who wants to learn and improve, not necessarily to compete but to enjoy training and riding our lovely horses and ponies.

I like to teach all levels but particularly novice riders, both children and adults. I focus on basic techniques for dressage, jumping and especially cross country. Once a foundation is established, the rest depends upon what you want to achieve, and how far you want to go.

I teach at my home near Shaftesbury, but am also happy to travel to you, within a reasonable distance.   I also offer clinics, test riding, and lecture demos for flat work, jumping, and cross country riding.

I am currently writing a series of books called “Right from the Start” the first of which is about cross-country riding, “The Wylye Way.”

My background

As a young rider I trained for five years at Wylye, home of the international Wylye horse trials, with world-class training from Lady Hugh Russell. I completed Badminton at 18 and passed my BHSI exams at 20.

Since then, I have worked in private yards, run a large riding school, built and run Equi-Sense, a successful training and competition yard, and competed to Inter 1 Dressage.   I have worked with the top trainers over the years, latterly with Ulla Salzgeber, Olympic World and European Champion dressage rider. I have produced many young horses to Eventing and Dressage disciplines.

My pupils have included an FEI Pony Dressage European medallist, and Pony and Junior FEI European three-day event medallists.  Now, as well as helping competitors at every level of competition, I specialise in training young horses and novice riders, of whatever age, giving them the confidence and knowledge needed for both riding and looking after their horses – a true all-round teacher.
